Diary of a Garden – Episode 1
Isn’t it exciting when your daydreams become reality?
Back in the dark days of February, I was inspired to make a plan for a super ambitious vegetable garden. I tend to dream big – and sometimes my reality doesn’t always meet my lofty desires. But, to my utmost surprise and delight, my plan is coming together!!!
Thanks to many hours of work by my dad, my husband and myself, we have four fantastic 4′ X 8′ garden boxes. We’ve got gravel walkways between the boxes, lots of gorgeous black soil, organic fertilizer – and now, we’ve got seeds!
I know it’s a little late in the season to get some of these seeds started, but I thought I’d just go for it and see how it turns out. I’ve never grown anything from seed before, but I’m hoping that my enthusiasm will temper my ineptitude in this instance.

I spent the weekend working a bunch of compost and fertilizer into my soil.
******
I bought some seeds and some starts and started thinking about where they would fit. Here’s what I have:
******
Then I made a plan. This was fun.
******
I planted my seeds. I still haven’t planted my starts. I’m hoping to do that today.

Oh the possibilities in a box of dirt! Have you started your garden yet this year? What are you growing?

Hey, want to go paragliding? Yeah. Me neither. My kind of ‘stunts’ are more centered around the home. I chronicle the ups and downs of my domestic adventures in hopes of offering creative inspiration to folks like me. And failing that, some friendly commiseration at least. Luv it!! We did our first square foot garden this year too:) Every morning the girls luv checking outside to see what has grown and to water it. We planted cabbage, lettuce and peas from seeds, strawberries and some flowers by starters:) already got some little visitors eating the leaves, so we are researching a natural safe insecticide. Allen build a cover out of pvc pipes and chicken wire to keep the birds, etc.. out with a shade when its super hot or windy. Its a great learning experience, enjoy!!:)
Adorable! I bet your girls are just loving it. I’m hoping when my little ones get bigger they’ll be excited (and helpful…hopefully) about growing things too!
Gorgeous raised beds! I’m jealous! I do the plan too on excel!
Btw nasturtiums naturally trap aphids, and copper tape on the boxes helps keep slugs off too!
Anna, thanks for the tips! I need to know these things!
Wow wow wow. I love it when ambition meets action!
That’s brilliant. We grew tomatoes and peas from seeds this year on our balcony. Then I over fertilized the tomatoes and they all died. The peas survived and we got a few pods. The girls loved them. I cheated and then bought a replacement tomato plant. Will have to see if that can grow.
